FLAT ROCK — Fans of ice cream and bluegrass are invited to Celebrate Flat Rock Saturday.
Mayor Bob Staton will kick off the festivities at noon. The Celebrate Flat Rock Ice Cream Social including a bluegrass band and other activities is noon until 4 p.m.
Bands include Appalachian fire, led by Dwayne "Doc" Durham and featuring co-founder Cliff Searcy on mandolin and dobro, Jim Fox on bass, Cindy Cook on mandolin and vocals, Tim Francis on banjo and Mike Williams on fiddle; the Bishop Brothers (Myron, Wayne and Lenoir) bluegrass band from Brevard; Simple Folk, a four-piece Asheville/Hendersonville band known for its rich, three-part vocal harmonies and the variety of material; and the West Henderson High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Alan Klaes.
The ice cream menu includes vanilla, chocolate chip, Strawberry, no-sugar-added butter pecan and sherbet.
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will host free four walking tours of Connemara as part of Celebrate Flat Rock 2013. The tours, which start at the Sandburg home, are at 11 a.m. and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. The Book Exchange (the Old Post Office) will hold a half price book sale from noon to 4 p.m. The Blue Ridge Fire Department is arranging appearances by the Sheriff's Department K-9 unit, bomb squad and SWAT Team. And the Flat Rock Village Merchants Association will again be selling hot dogs, soda and chips as well as cookbooks to benefit its annual Christmas Charity Program
That evening the Flat Rock Village Merchants Association Music Series, sponsored by the Village of Flat Rock, will feature singer-songwriter Tom Fisch. The performance will be on the back porch of the Wrinkled Egg beginning at 6 p.m. Bring a lawn chair. Leave pets at home.
