The League of Women Voters of Henderson County will host a panel titled "Redistricting — What Happens Now?" at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Kaplan Auditorium in the Henderson County Library. The panelists will be state Rep. Chuck McGrady, Sen. Terry Van Duyn and Blake Esselstyn, an expert on the use of GIS for drawing maps. After comments by each panelist, the speakers will respond to questions submitted by the audience. Co-sponsors for the event are the League of Women Voters of Asheville-Buncombe, Carolina Jews for Justice, DemocracyNC, Fair DistrictsWNC, NAACP, AAUW, Down Home NC, and Unity of the Blue Ridge. For the first time in recent memory, Flat Rock has contested elections for all three Village Council seats. Candidates filed this week in District 1 and District 3, meaning there are two candidates for each of the seats up for election this fall. The hot issue is the council's vote in 2018 to endorse the Highland Lake Road widening project, which drew strong opposition from village residents. Read Story »

ASHEVILLE — A federal grand jury issued an indictment on Tuesday charging former Buncombe County Commissioner Ellen Madans Frost with conspiring to commit federal program fraud, federal program fraud and mail fraud, for her involvement in a scheme to divert more than $575,000 in Buncombe County money to sponsor equestrian activities in North Carolina and Florida, U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray announced. A lively race could be shaping up in Mills River as three challengers have joined the two incumbents up for re-election this year. Roger Snyder and Wayne Carland, the last remaining council members who were on the town's original governing board when it incorporated in 2003, filed on the first day of filing. Challengers Randy Austin, John E. Case and Mark V. Case have also filed for the town board. Mills River voters two years ago showed that they were open to change, ousting incumbents Larry Freeman and Billy Johnston and electing Brian Caskey and Richmond Meadows.
