Gladys Scheffrin Falk, 85

Hendersonville author Gladys Scheffrin Falk, whose children's book is a staple of home schooler's reading throughout the U.S., died Friday, March 7, 2014, at Pardee Memorial Hospital in Hendersonville. She was 85 and had had a stroke.

Ms. Scheffrin Falk's book, Another Celebrated Dancing Bear, (Scribner's, Purple House Press) won accolades in the U.S. and abroad, is a Five in Row home school selection, and was named a NY Times top 10 illustrated book of the year in 1991. The book, with etchings by Barbara Garrison, was a Golden Book selection, was a nominee for the Ezra Jack Keats UNICEF international competition, and received a number of other national and international honors.

Ms. Scheffrin Falk was a native of Atlantic City, NJ, and a graduate of the City College of NY. She was for many years a medical social worker and case manager with the elderly in the NYC Health and Hospital Corp. and Bellvue Hospital in New York City.

She is also author of the novel, One Summer of Lightning (Xlibris).

Ms. Scheffrin Falk is survived by her husband, Herbert, of Hendersonville; a brother, Jules Scheffrin, of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Eugenie Moody of Teaneck, NJ, and a son, Werner Padilla of Cabo Rocho, Puerto Rico; and stepchildren Charles Falk and Michael Barnett of Portland, Ore.; and grandchildren Nicole Weber of New York and Cooper Barnett of Portland.

Pastor Gordon Lawrence Burton, 82

Pastor Gordon Lawrence Burton, 82, of Fletcher passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Elizabeth House after a long illness. His last days passed quietly as he was surrounded by his loving
family.

He was born March 23, 1931, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa to the late Ithiel Basil Burton and Lenora Pierce Dalton Burton. He was also preceded in death by a son, Glenn Leonard Burton and a brother, I. Barry Burton.

He was a school teacher in Ohio, Newfoundland and Florida, a hospital human resources director in Ontario, Canada, and served as Pastor in Portales, New Mexico, and Lubbock and Midland, Texas. Also in Ketchum, Hugo, Bartlesville and Shattuck, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia Burton; one son, Gordon Jay Burton and his wife Consuelo of Texas; two daughters, Lenora Burton and her companion Allan Ward of Montana and Charlene

Ingulfsen and her husband Tore of Fletcher; three grandchildren, Darcey, Kristin and Ellen and two nieces and a nephew.

A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Arden Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Jeff Wait officiating.

Dorothy R. Justus, 78

Dorothy R. Justus, 78, of Hendersonville passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Elizabeth House.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was a daughter of the late Albert Buford and Dolly Elizabeth Davidson Rhodes. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Arrie Dorman Payseur Jr., three brothers: Rev. Albert Rhodes, Rev. Willard Rhodes, Donald Rhodes; and her sister, Annie Morrison.

Dorothy was the valedictorian of her senior class in high school, and attended Western Carolina University, where she earned a Bachelors of Science in Education. She worked as a public school teacher and a social worker.

During her later years of life, Dorothy also worked as an accountant and tax Advisor. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and artwork. A loving mother, she left an indelible mark on her family, friends and the community. She will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her three sons, Tim Payseur and wife Vicky of Willow Spring, Rick Payseur of Columbia, S.C., Bob Payseur of Edneyville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; her brother Rev. Darrell Rhodes; her two sisters, Christine Rhodes, Wilsie Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dan Blackwell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm, prior to the service in the chapel.

Harriett Frances Fowler Worthy, 88

Harriett Frances Fowler Worthy, 88, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at her home.

She was lovingly known as Sweetie Number One by her husband.

A native of Henderson County she was born on March 22, 1925, to Vernon and Tina Hyder Fowler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Worthy, their infant son, Larry; and four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Worthy was a skilled hand weaver in the family business Worthy Hand Weavers for 45 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Judy King (Charlie Kilpatrick) of Hendersonville, who were Harriett's caregivers, Barbara W. Fleming (Glen) of Salem, S.C., and Diane W. Hollon of Hendersonville; one granddaughter, Kimberly King (Elizabeth) of Las Cruces, N.M.; two grandsons, Chance Jones ( Jessica ) and Josh Shelton; four great children; and four brothers, Porter Fowler, George Fowler, Onnie Fowler, and Stan Fowler.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2014, at Thomas Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and other times at the home.

Graveside services will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Dr. Ansel Pace officiating.

Mary Corbett Sitton, 85

Mrs. Mary Corbett Sitton, 85, of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Mrs. Sitton was a member of Pisgah Forest Baptist Church. She was retired from Ecusta Paper Corporation. A lover of gospel music, she sang, played the piano, the organ and traveled to attend gospel concerts.

Mrs. Sitton was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, David E. Sitton, and her parents, Barnard B. and Bonnie Hill Corbett.

Mrs. Sitton is survived by her brother, Thomas B. Corbett and wife, Martha, of Hendersonville; niece, Debbie Lanning and husband, Bud, of Fletcher; and one great nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time Tuesday. Committal services will be held at a later date.

Ronsard "Ron" A. Balson, 84

Ronsard "Ron" A. Balson, 84, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Greenville Medical Center in Greenville, SC.

Ron was born March 1, 1930 in Chicago to the late James A. and Ruth Minter Balson. In addition to his parents Ron was preceded in death by a grandson Nicholas.

He served in the US Marine Corps from 1951-1953, and was employed with Western Union for 31 years until his retirement in 1987.

In 1987 Ron and Betty moved to Hendersonville and Sugarloaf Mountain Mobile Home Park. They lived and worked there until they sold the park and officially retired in 1999. Ron was of the Baptist faith and was always involved with the church as much as he could. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many of his church friends.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Drake Balson; a daughter Pamela Finlayson; sons Al Balson and Daniel Balson; 15 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Refuge Baptist Church in Dana, with Rev Roy Perry officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. A reception will be held following the committal service in the Life Care Center of the church.

Mrs. Peggy Louise Griffin, 75

Mrs. Peggy Louise Griffin, 75, of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Mrs. Griffin was a long time Christian who truly loved the Lord. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, James L. Griffin, and her parents, George and Myrtle Murphy.

Surviving family to cherish her memory include daughters, Sheila McFalls and husband, John of Hendersonville, Brenda Conner and husband, John of East Flat Rock, grandchildren; Scott Martin, Luke Conner and fiancé, Tracy, and Christy Conner and fiancé, John, great-grandchildren; Laelyn Conner and Adeleya Carney, sister, Mary Connor Metcalf of Woodruff, SC, brothers; G.L. Murphy, James Murphy, Paul Murphy, Charles Murphy and Roy Murphy all of Hendersonville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Gethsemane Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Pridmore officiating. Mrs. Griffin will be laid to rest at Shepherd Memorial Park.

J.V. Brown, 83

J.V. Brown, 83, of Flat Rock passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Rutherford County and a resident of Henderson County most of his life, he was a son of the late Wilbern F. and Effie E. Jones Brown. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Pruitt Brown; sister, Patricia Freeman; brother, Daniel E. Brown; grandson, Jacob Paul Tankersley.

He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper and helped train paratroopers during the Korean War. Mr. Brown helped establish Blue Ridge Fire & Rescue, was a life time member and a former chief and fire commissioner.

He was employed by Cranston Print Works, retired from General Electric and was a jack of all trades that could do anything. He was a practical joker and a prankster. J.V loved his family with all of his heart and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his son, Gary Brown and wife, Barbara; daughters, Carolyn Cox and husband Daniel, Rhonda O'Connor and husband Tom, Sheila Barnwell and husband Ricky, Glenda Tankersley and husband Doug; grandchildren, Julie Holbert, Jeremy Cox, Lisa Hardy, Gary Brown, Jr., Cindy Staton, Kim and Heather O'Connor, Tanya Levi and Elijah Tankersley; 31 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Prince; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Victory Baptist Church with Pastors Stanley Adcock and Doug Tankersley officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family received friends Sunday, from 5 to 8 pm at the church.

John D. Saxon, Jr., 87

John D. Saxon, Jr., 87, of Hendersonville went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Pardee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

During WWII he served as a radarman with the Navy. Before retiring, John was a Civil Engineer with the State of Florida Road Department, building roads and bridges for thirty-three years. He was a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school, spending time with his grandchildren, and telling stories. John took a lot of pride in his yard work and gardening. He lived a good, long life as a true man of God who loved his family with all his heart. He was the patriarch our family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Frances "Dolly" Saxon; a son, John F. Saxon of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Valerie Jean Bergsten of Brandon, Miss.; four grandchildren, John F. Saxon, Jr., Amy Chisholm, Dawn Clancy, Ray Bergsten; eight great-grandchildren, Tucker, J.D., James, Austin, Sophia, Zack, Jamison, and Zack; and a brother, Tom Saxon of Ridgeland, S.C.

A funeral will be at noon Monday, March 10, 2014, at Beulah Baptist Church. Rev. Dewey Barnwell will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service in the church.

Edison R. "Ed" Capps, 82

Edison R. "Ed" Capps, USAF Retired, 82, of Hendersonville passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Elizabeth House.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Mae Ballard Capps and a brother, Denver Capps.

Edison retired from the U.S. Air Force serving 23 years in Germany and Japan and the Canal Zone during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Maintenance Missile Man of the Year Award in 1964. After retiring Ed had served as Maintenance Supervisor for Henderson County for 14 years, was a Transport Officer for the Henderson County Sheriffs Office for 4 years and owned and operated Crab Creek Grocery.

He was "Prayer Warrior" and a deacon of Mtn. Home Baptist Church and a Master Mason.

Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Lula Belle Williams "Lou" Capps; two sons, Albert Thomas Capps and his wife Leny of Concord, and Thomas Edison Capps and his wife Marlene of Kings Mountain; a sister, Lou Nelson of Hendersonville; a sister in-law Estelle Capps wife of Denver Capps; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Mtn. Home Baptist Church with Rev. Craig Garren officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force and Masonic Rites conducted by the Hendersonville Kedron Lodge #387. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church and at other times will be at the home.

Bruce Allen McLean, 81

Bruce Allen McLean, 81, of Saluda died Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Bruce was the son of the late Vannoy G. and Ferry A. McLean. Bruce was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He grew up in Asheville and then raised a family in Candler and later in life moved to Saluda. Bruce was a salesman for Scronce Automotive and retired from Carquest Auto Parts.

Bruce was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Allen McLean, Jr. and by his wife, Ruth B. McLean, and grandsons, Eric V. McLean and Andrew L. Kuykendall.

Bruce is survived by sons, Brian McLean and wife, Dana of Crimora, Va., David McLean and wife, Suzy of Blacksburg, S.C., Matthew McLean and wife, Julie of Candler, Larry Staton of Saluda, who was also his wonderful caregiver; daughter, Theresa Kuykendall and husband, Jim of Canton, and grandchildren; Anna McLean, Russell McLean, Whitney McLean, Tyler McLean, Angel Holifield and Jeff Holifield.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with Pastor Richard Merck officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Page Baptist Church Cemetery.

Janet Ryden Michener, 88

Janet Ryden Michener, age 88, of Hendersonville died Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Pardee Hospital.

She was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of the late Harry Ryden and Laura Bloom Ryden. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and from Grinnell College, where she met her husband. They were married after graduation from Grinnell, and lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Connecticut before moving to Hendersonville in 1982.

She had a successful mid-life career as a real estate broker in both Connecticut and North Carolina, retiring in 1990. She served St. James Church as a former choir member, a Thursday Thrift Shop worker, and on numerous committees. She earned golf team letters in high school and college, was a former ladies club champion at Kenmure, and continued to play into her 80's.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Michener. She is survived by her husband, Wallace Michener, whom she married in 1948; a daughter, Ann Michener of Asheville; a son, John Michener and wife Julie of Minneapolis; and a brother, Richard Ryden of Des Moines, IA.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Joel Hafer will officiate. At her request her body will be donated to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and her cremated remains will be buried at a later date in the St. James Memorial Garden.

Rose Ella Scroggins, 84

Rose Ella Scroggins was called home to be with the Lord on March 1, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Rose Ella was 84 years old.

Rose Ella is the widow of the late Walter Scroggins.

She is survived by her three sons, David, Bobby and Robert Scroggins. Rose Ella has four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday March 6, 2014, at The Chapel in the Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with the Rev. Jimmy Spence officiating. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service in the chapel. Interment will follow the service at Shepherd Memorial Park.

Dorothy Jane Hardenburg, 80

Dorothy Jane Hardenburg, 80, of Hendersonville died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Flat Rock.

Born in Somerville, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Elsie Mingle Morris. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Hardenburg, who died in 2012.

After her marriage, Dorothy and her husband, Robert Hardenburg, moved to Pennsylvania. She was employed by Prudential Insurance Company and RCA. After retiring, she and Robert moved to Hendersonville in 1989. Dorothy enjoyed walking, cooking, traveling and camping. She was a member of Balfour United Methodist Church.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Robert Hardenburg of Hendersonville; two daughters, Nancy Hardenburg of the home and Bonnie Paynter and her husband, Daniel, of Delaware; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Balfour United Methodist Church with Reverend Deb Patterson officiating.

Golda "Goldie" Frisbee Jackson, 92

Golda "Goldie" Frisbee Jackson, 92, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at The Laurels of Hendersonville.

She had lived in Henderson County for most of her life and was preceded in death by her parents, Wexter and Dovie Gentry Frisbee; her husband, Grady B. Jackson; a son, Gerald W. Jackson; five brothers, Wayne, Ralph, Lee, Dewey and Clyde; and three sisters, Eula Bishop, Edna Bishop and Lena Cornn.

Golda was a faithful member of Sugarloaf Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, "Pie" Juanita Jackson of Hendersonville; two granddaughters and their spouses, June and Brently Edney and Geraldine and Dale Lamb all of Hendersonville; three great grandchildren, Justin and Rayce Lamb and Austin Edney and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Phillip Capell officiating.

Nancy Hall Baird, 82

Nancy Hall Baird, 82

Nancy Hall Baird, 82, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, Feb.y 18, 2014, from complications following a stroke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Baird, in 2012.

Born March 15, 1931 to Mr. and Mrs. W. Bigelow Hall, Nancy grew up in Needham, Mass. As a Girl Scout, she developed a love for the outdoors, including swimming in mountain streams, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and camping in the New Hampshire mountains with her dad and sister Eleanor.

Nancy married Charles in 1955. She taught third grade in Cincinnati while Charles completed his masters degree. In 1962, the couple moved with their young family to Madison, Wisc. There they raised a family which grew to six.

Nancy was truly a people person. She loved helping people, and her extensive volunteer work included delivering Meals on Wheels, counseling at the Pregnancy Information Center, faithfully donating blood to the American Red Cross, teaching Aqua Fitness exercise classes, and serving with her husband at the East Madison YMCA. Her continuing love for the outdoors found expression in family vacations to Door County and Fort Wilderness Christian Camp in northern Wisconsin.

In 1996, Nancy and Charles retired to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Here they devoted themselves tirelessly to charitable activities through their church, the Hendersonville Church of God, and also found time to travel widely, touring Alaska, Israel and Greece.

Nancy is survived by her four children: David Baird of Portage, Wisc., Katie Chavez of Charlotte, Mary Morkved of Fremont, Calf., and John Baird of Middleton, Wisc., and by eight grandchildren, and by her sister Eleanor Yesmentes of Boothbay, Maine.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Spring Arbor of Hendersonville for their loving care.

A private burial is planned at the Western Carolina Veteran's Cemetery.
