John Charles Clay of Flat Rock died on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, the day before his 76th birthday, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was born in Syracuse, NY to the late Charles and Laura Whitaker Clay, and was raised in Gloversville, NY.
He was a graduate of the Mount Hermon School and Colgate University. In 1964 he joined the Information Systems Division of Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, OH. This positon took him to Greece for 2 years and to Spain for 6 years. Upon returning, he managed the Latin America and Asia Pacific areas of Information Systems until retirement.
After retiring, he and Barbara moved to Hendersonville where he enjoyed getting together with friends, playing golf and traveling. He was a volunteer Golf Rules Official for the CGA and also an ESL tutor at Bruce Drysdale School.
He is survived by his loving wife, best friend and golfing partner of 54 years, Barbara; son, Scott Clay and his wife, Audra; daughter, Laura Cohen and her husband, Michael; and mother-in-law, Dorothy Schorr. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Logan Clay, Maxwell Cohen and Rebecca Cohen, who brought joy to his heart and a smile to his face.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Shuler Funeral Home, followed by a small reception at Hendersonville Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s name to The Free Clinics (841 Case St., Hendersonville, NC 28792) or the charity of your choice.
