Dr. Katherine Ann "Kate" Hoelscher, age 55, passed on peacefully amidst
her family at home in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on Aug. 13, 2013,
after a courageous three-year journey with ovarian cancer.
She was born on October 4, 1957, in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was the beloved daughter
of Margaret B. and the late James W. Hoelscher, Sr. Formerly a resident of
Old Greenwich, Connecticut, and Ossining, New York, Kate recently
relocated to Hendersonville.
Kate was a lifelong UCONN Huskies fan having graduated with a BA in
Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 1979. She received her
Masters Degree in Social Work from Fordham University in May of 1982, and
earned a PhD in Education in 1997, from Walden University.
She devoted her career to meeting the needs of the developmentally
disabled in Westchester County, NY. First at the Westchester Association
for Retarded Citizens and then 23 years at the Westchester School for
Special Children where she served in various capacities retiring as the
Director of Clinical Services in 2013.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her four brothers, Jim
Hoelscher and his wife Kate, of Aiken, SC, Tom Hoelscher and his wife
Wendy, of Barboursville, VA, John Hoelscher and his wife Lysa, of Austin,
TX, Mike Hoelscher and his wife Lori, of Wallingford, CT, and her sister,
Margie and her husband Dave Pitts, of Gulf Breeze, FL. She was a
fun-loving and inspiring aunt to Sam, Cameron, Ben, Stephanie, Tory,
Carly, and Jessica.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17,
2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church's Our Lady of the Angels
Chapel in Hendersonville with Fr. Thomas Thorne and Fr. Martin Schratz
officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Amherst, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, Kate has requested memorial donations be made to the
Westchester School for Special Children (WSSC), 45 Park Avenue, Yonkers,
NY 10703.
