Mildred Omega Kelly Garey, 98, of Hendersonville passed away to her rest Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at her residence.
A longtime resident of Mountain Home, Mildred was born June 3, 1916, in Carroll County, Tenn., to the late John William Kelly and Mary Leona Brown Kelly. She was a 1935 graduate of Milan High School in Milan, Tenn. She later married the late James Elmo Garey on Dec. 26, 1936.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son Jimmie Kelly Garey, a grandson James Douglas Garey, a sister Vennie Mae Port and a brother Hubert Kelly.
In 1952, Mildred and James, moved to Western North Carolina to be close to family and to have the opportunity to provide their children a Christian education. Mildred was a homemaker, and in addition to raising her children, she helped her husband through the years with bookkeeping and running errands for their family owned business. She was an active member in the Hendersonville Seventh-day Adventist Church and later the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church. She also volunteered at the Fletcher Hospital, now Park Ridge Hospital and served as a member of the auxiliary board.
She is survived by her two daughters Mary Garey Orr of Overland Park, Kan., Delphia Garey Hyams and her husband Butch of Asheville and a son Charles Garey of Mt. Home. Other survivors include eight grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be heldat 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1141 Howard Gap Road, officiated by Pastor Brent Sedgwick. Entombment will follow at the Mausoleum of Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Four Seasons Hospice of Hendersonville and/or to Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
