The Abraham Kuykendall Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter and the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution marked the grave of Patriot Matthew Maybin and recognized his descendants on Nov. 12.
The grave is located in the Maybin Family Cemetery in Green River. Born January 13, 1756 in County Antrim, Ireland, Maybin immigrated to South Carolina with the Scot-Irish Presbyterians. He became a resident of Ninety-Six Court District of South Carolina and entered Revolutionary War service in 1775 under the command of Col. John Liles. He served six tours of duty. Maybin, who died Jan. 9, 1843, at age 86, is recognized as one of the earliest settlers of the Green River area. He owned extensive land along the Green River into Mountain Page. Anyone age 18 or older with ancestral ties to Matthew Maybin is eligible to join the DAR and SAR.
