The Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County will honor longtime Hendersonville resident Marcia Caserio as the 2012 Local Hero at its Annual Celebration Dinner on Saturday, June 9.The Local Hero Award honors community members who provide true examples of the caliber of adult that Boys & Girls Club members are encouraged to become: productive, caring, responsible citizens. Past Local Hero recipients include Jeff Miller, Steve and Lynn Easler, Bill Stokes and Eleanora Meloun.
"Marcia has been a powerful catalyst for good in our community, but her contributions go far beyond just putting ideas into motion," said Sue Fazio, founder of the local club. "She's been instrumental in the sustainability of many of our community's most critically needed agencies. Her influence will continue to impact people from all walks of life in Henderson County for years to come."
Mrs. Caserio initially moved to Hendersonville in 1982 with her husband, Dr. James Caserio, to raise a family. While her professional career began in speech therapy, Caserio's robust efforts as a volunteer benefited Henderson County citizens across the spectrum. "You can't ignore the needs of anyone in society, and you can't minimize the impact of community engagement," said Caserio, who is also a former Miss North Carolina, USA.
As a volunteer, Caserio is responsible for implementing programs that have raised millions of dollars for local agencies. She has served significantly on numerous boards including the Henderson County Medical Society Auxiliary, the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, United Way of Henderson County, the Community Foundation of Henderson County, the Children and Family Resource Center, Smart Start, Pardee Hospital Foundation and Immaculata School Board. Her professional accomplishments include the creation of an award-winning gerontology program through Western Carolina University and Pardee Hospital.
Caserio will receive the Local Hero Award at the annual Celebration Dinner at Champion Hills Country Club. With a theme of Dream Out Loud, the gala celebrates the accomplishments, vision and commitment behind the club's effective track record with at-risk youth in Henderson County. Tickets are $125 per person and event proceeds benefit award-winning programs offered to the more than 1,500 children served by the Club throughout the year.
