The Henderson County Historic Courthouse will fly a replica of the original flag of the 13 colonies, "Stars and Stripes", created by Betsy Ross in 1776, for Memorial Day weekend.
The flag, designed during the American Revolution, features motifs of alternating red-and-white striped field with 13 five-pointed stars in a blue canton. The distinctive feature of the flag is the arrangement of the stars in a circle.
"This flag plays a major role in United States history," said County Manager Steve Wyatt. "It was created alongside the foundation of our Republic and its basic design has lasted into the present.
"It is a reminder of the many brave men and women of our country that have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and our way of life the past 236 years. Flying this flag over Memorial Day weekend reminds us, as United States citizens, that freedom has a cost."
The flag will go up Friday morning and come down Tuesday.
