The Community Orchestra of Hendersonville will present its spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The 43-member orchestra, under the direction of Robert Hudson, will perform a variety of music featuring soloists and sections of the orchestra. Because of the variety of music to be presented, the concert should be a good exposure for children.
The concert will open with a Fantasy for strings by Orlando Gibbons from the early 17th century, then proceed to music of Henry Purcell from the late 17th century featuring trumpeters Jay Carrigan, Russ Sena, Peter Voisin and Pamela Voisin. A good contrast by Telemann will follow, featuring a small ensemble of sopranino recorder, two violins, cello and harpsichord. The first half of the concert will end featuring Aaron Coffin in a performance of "Kol Nidrei" by Max Bruch for cello and full orchestra.
After an intermission Jennifer Merrell will be featured in a performance of the Horn Concerto No. 4, K.495 by Mozart. In honor and in memory of Alfred Knopf, the orchestra will perform two movements from his string quartet composed in 1944 after learning about the Holocaust atrocities. The concert will end with a performance of Symphony for Brass by 19th century composer, Victor Ewald.
The concert is free. Donations will be gratefully received to offset music and rehearsal expenses. Trinity Presbyterian Church is at 900 Blythe St., Hendersonville. For more information call 828-693-3081.
