Storm forecast cancels Harambee Festival

A forecast of thunderstorms over the weekend prompted organizers to call off the three-day Harambee Festival.

“Unfortunately, due to weather predictions from the National and Greenville weather service, we are having to cancel the festival for the entire weekend,” organizer Diane Caldwell said Thursday evening in an email. “According to them, we will have a complete wash-out all weekend.  We decided that was to much risk for both vendors and entertainers.  We didn't want to have them, especially vendors assume that kind of loss.”

The 20th annual three-day festival on Seventh Avenue and at Sullivan Park was to include a performance Friday night by Boys and Girls Club middle school students who won a scholarship to a YouTheatre summer camp program, bands and dance groups, seven food vendors, face painting and other booths. The Boys and Girls Club performance has been tentatively scheduled for next week at the club, Caldwell said.

After showers Friday afternoon, it became sunny. The forecast today called for a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=gsp&;FcstType=text&zmx=1&zmy=1&map.x=142&map.y=122&site=GSP

Caldwell said organizers are looking to either reschedule the event to October when it’s cooler or hold it in 2013.
