Local swimmers bring home medals from state

Pat Barratt and Dana Carter say a tough taskmaster, Dick Webber, ignited their interest in competitive swimming.

"He's the reason why I'm swimming in the Senior Games," said Carter, who is 70.
Carter and Barratt, two members of the Hendersonville YMCA Four Seasons swim team that finished fifth in the state meet recently, were back in the pool on Friday, Oct. 12, working out under their coach, Eric Hyder.
Webber, a nationally ranked masters swimmer who died in November 2011 at age 82, made sure that the senior swimmers had three lanes for practice at noon.
"He started the masters swimming at a very convenient time for us," Barratt said.
The Hendersonville swimmers finished behind several larger clubs but celebrated defeating an archrival.
"The exciting part was we beat out Asheville-Buncombe County," said Barratt, who earned five gold medals. "We finished fifth and Asheville finished sixth."
Barratt was a swim team mom who took up swimming after her kids grew up. She swam for fitness. Dick Webber made her swim for the gold. Carter agreed that he was the inspiration.
"I love swimming," she said. "It was Dick Webber that made me swim fast. I'm getting better at it."
