APPLE FESTIVAL: Farmers market, Learning Adventure, no dogs

Farmers market The Historic Seventh Avenue District is will hold its sixth annual Farmers Market Sunday on Maple Street in front of the Historic Train Depot. This market is a Special Event of the Apple Festival. In addition to local produce, the market features artisans whose unique work comes from the farm. The market offers pasture raised pork, beef and chicken, gourmet gelato made from goat’s milk, local honey, jams, jellies, local wine and hard cider. Artisans are offering an exciting variety of work from local sheep farmers who make their own yarn and then produce their own goods to a couple that uses vines from the forest to make beautiful arbors and unique plant holders. Hours are 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Trolley Company of Hendersonville will be running a special trolley between Jackson Park and Main Street with stops at the Farmers Market. There is also free parking in the Seventh Avenue area. A sad tale Dogs. Yep, we love ‘em, too. But sorry to say, they’re not welcome at the Apple Festival. As much as these two Jack Russells might love the adventure and the sights and the smells, they must remain comfortably at home. Learning Adventure for kids The Apple Festival will feature PNC Foundation’s Mobile Learning Adventure for the first time this year. The Mobile Learning Adventure is a traveling exhibit that provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn about the importance of early childhood education while they engage in fun activities with their children. It’s a part of PNC Grow Up Great, which began in 2004 to help children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. The mobile unit includes interactive kiosks and the “When I Grow Up” station, where kids dress up as different professionals and have their picture superimposed on an appropriate background. In addition, parents can take home activity books and learning kits that demonstrate how to take everyday moments and turn them into learning opportunities. The Mobile Learning Adventure will be located in the 600 Block of Main Street on Friday, September 4, 2015 through Sunday, September 6, 2015 and is provided by the PNC Foundation. The hours are 10:00am until 6:00pm. APPLE FESTIVAL: Grower of the year honored

The second largest apple grower in the county in the 1970s and '80s, Jerry Laughter founded Edneyville Packers and helped spark industry growth in the orchards and production side. Besides his own career, he's done something else right. He's kept young members of the Laughter family in business. Laughter, 72, was recognized on Friday during the opening ceremonies at the North Carolina Apple Festival as the 2015 United Community Bank Apple Farmer of the Year. The Laughter family has operated an apple stand at the Apple Festival for 22 years. The Circle L Farm stand across from the Historic Courthouse was where you could find five Laughter grandchildren selling fresh apples, apple turnovers and fried apple pies. Jerry Laughter accepts the Apple Grower of the Year Award during opening ceremonies of the 2015 Apple Festival.“He’s employed dozens of people throughout his career,” said his grandson, Kye Laughter, who nominated his grandfather along with his sister Brynna and cousins Chelsie, Ashton and Trenton. “If you ask anybody in Edneyville what they think of Jerry Laughter, he is known for his generosity. He doesn’t judge people based on what they’ve got in their bank account or how they appear. In the farming community I think he set a very good precedent for what the county has done.”Through packing, he had a very success business. At one time he grew 800 acres of apples in Henderson and Polk counties. Now he grows about 100 acres. "He is well known for his generosity and humor," said Fair Waggoner, city president of United Community Bank. "No matter the situation, he will always help others succeed and he will always be a proud Edneyville apple grower."       Read Story »
