Hendersonville's first downtown brewery, Sanctuary Brewing Company, opened on Friday night, drawing a big crowd for craft beer, food, music and adoptable puppies.
"We were slammed two hours ago," co-owner Lisa McDonald said at 11 o'clock Friday night.
McDonald and her partner, master brewer Joe Dinan, have combined their love of animals with a love of craft beer to create the 4,000-square-foot bar at 147 E. First Avenue. Although they have not yet received a federal permit allowing them to brew and pour their own beer, they opened with more than a dozen flavors from other local craft breweries.
Opening night featured music by Emily Bodley, food by Edible Musings, No Evil Foods and Roots Hummus and Blue Ridge Humane Society puppies awaiting adoption.
Sanctuary Brewing Company will make small batch artisanal ales in classic styles like Belgian farmhouse ales, American stouts and West Coast IPAs. The Hendersonville City Council made the brewery possible by amending the city ordinance to allow the use in the central business district.
