Henderson County Commissioner Michael Edney announced Wednesday that he will oppose a rezoning request to allow an asphalt plant in East Flat Rock. Edney said he was announcing his decision now "to help alleviate the fear and stress brought on by uncontrolled misinformation."
After a public hearing on the request on May 17, Edney asked for more time to review expert testimony, studies and other information submitted by applicant Jeff Shipman and his attorney and by opponents of the rezoning. Here is Edney's full statement:
"The Henderson County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 to vote on the Conditional Zoning Application for the Shipman Enterprises property located between US Hwy 176 and US Hwy 25. After spending a considerable amount of time reviewing the application, the various professional studies and reports, the public comments, and emails, I have determined that I will not support the application.
"I am announcing my position now in part because I was the Commissioner who requested the additional time to read and study the new information provided by attorneys. My primary reason for making this statement as early as possible is to help alleviate the fear and stress brought on by uncontrolled misinformation. To be clear, I am speaking only for myself as one of five sitting County Commissioners."
