Incumbent District Attorney Andrew Murray appeared to have won election to the office by defeating challenger Mary Ann Hollocker during Tuesday’s Republican primary.
With all 57 precincts reporting, Murray earned 14,797 votes or 63.12 percent of the vote to Hollocker’s 8,644 votes or 36.88 percent, according to unofficial results.
“I greatly appreciate the electorate and what they did,” Murray said after determining he will likely continue to serve as District Attorney for Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties. “Now on to the hard job of keeping the people of Henderson, Polk and Transylvania safe.”
Murray was appointed District Attorney last May after a Superior Court judge removed Greg Newman from the office for misconduct. Murray will not face a challenger in the November general election.
He said he wants to continue the work he began after his appointment last year by resolving the most serious cases in his district, addressing a bulge of cases created by the Covid-19 pandemic and “doing the right thing every time.”
Murray said he intends to serve not as a partisan politician but as a district attorney who represents all the people in his district.
Murray, 60, lives in Flat Rock with his wife, Pam. His children are Drew, Derek and Josh (deceased).
He has 14 years of experience as a state and federal prosecutor. He served for three of those years as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
Murray also has 35 combined years of active and reserve service with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Hollocker, 53, is an associate litigation attorney with Neumann Law Firm with a focus on domestic cases and civil litigation.
