A hole in the lakebed of Front Lake has caused the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site to close the pedestrian bridge from the parking lot to the main walking path leading to the home, goat barn and hiking trails at the site.
The hole "is allowing water to flow under the dam," the National Park Service attraction said on its Facebook page. "This has lowered the lake level. The park is working with engineers to address the issue."
To access park buildings, restrooms and trails, visitors will be directed to walk around Front Lake, a four-tenths mile detour.
Visitors may also use the gravel hikers’ parking lot a half mile west of the main parking lot on Little River Road. It's four-tenths of a mile from the hikers’ lot to the park buildings.
Those needing accessible parking should call 828-707-8125 upon arrival to the park. Limited parking or a park shuttle may be available.
