Commissioners celebrate 13½-acre addition to East Flat Rock Park

Henderson County commissioners snipped a ribbon Wednesday to celebrate the newest addition to county parks, a 13.5 acre forest adjoining East Flat Rock Park.

The county seized the opportunity when the parcel became available, buying it for $398,200 in April.

“It was the right thing to do because it takes this park and expands it," County Commission Chair Rebecca McCall said. "The Henderson County Board of Commissioners is dedicated to recreation and expanding recreation in Henderson County because it gets us out of the house, it gets us away from devices. It is all about a quality way of life. ... We haven't decided yet what it will be used for, possibly some additional soccer fields, but right now there's trees that are so beautiful. We can do a walking path through there, and we can do disc golf. So I hope the citizens will come out and take advantage of this space once it's open for you and available and just enjoy it.”

County Manager John Mitchell said plans now are for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and a consultant to draft a master plan for the park. Commissioners had looked at the land as a potential site for a planned sportsplex of athletic fields and tennis and pickleball courts but decided that the sloped topography was not suitable.
