Henderson County Cooperative Extension Director W. Terry Kelley received the Henderson County Farm Bureau ‘Henderson County Friend of Agriculture Award’ during the annual ceremony on Monday.
Dr. Kelley was honored for his loyal support of the agricultural industry and farmers of Henderson County.
This annual award honors community leaders who make a significant contribution to improve conditions for farmers and their businesses. Henderson County Farm Bureau presented two “Friend” awards this year. N.C. State Representative Jennifer Balkcom was also honored.
Kelley was chosen “because of all the work and hours he put forth in helping with the disaster relief program last year and what he has done to get one established for this year," Henderson County Farm Bureau President Jerred Nix noted. "The disaster relief program was key in keeping many farmers going last year.”
Kelley was instrumental in securing disaster relief for growers who were devastated by the freezing temperatures in April of 2021. The relief package from the N.C. Legislature included more than $7 million for apple and small fruit growers in Henderson County whose crops were devastated by the freeze that destroyed over 70 percent of the crop that year.
“Receiving this award from the Henderson County growers is very humbling," Kelley said. "I appreciate Henderson County Farm Bureau for presenting me with such a distinguished recognition. It is an honor to serve the people of Henderson County and to be called a 'Friend of Agriculture' is as great a distinction as I could receive. I appreciate all of my colleagues at Henderson County Cooperative Extension who do their jobs with the same commitment to service."
