Habitat seeks applicants to become sweat equity homeowners

Over the next 2½ years Henderson County Habitat for Humanity will be building 35 new homes at Dodd Meadows, the Habitat community in East Flat Rock. Habitat is currently taking applications to find qualified homeowners, accepting applications for home ownership through Nov. 30.

Henderson County is experiencing population growth, and more homes, condos and developments are under construction. Yet many residents cannot afford the new homes. Finding affordable rental property is even more daunting. Henderson County Habitat for Humanity, however, is making available 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom homes at a fair and affordable price. Dodd Meadows currently is home to 87 families in single-family homes and duplexes. Thirty-five more families will reside at Dodd Meadows in phases 3 and 6.

“Having a decent place to live at an affordable mortgage allows homeowners and children to feel safe and settled, save more, invest in education, and pursue opportunities,” Henderson County Habitat for Humanity CEO Linda Saturno said.

Applicants are required to invest a minimum of 300 sweat equity hours per applicant; meet document deadlines as requested, including but not limited to tax returns, birth certificates, bank statements and proof of citizenship; authorize credit and criminal background checks; and pay a non-refundable $30 application fee.

Begun in January 2013, Dodd Meadows is open to families, senior citizens, and those with disabilities. As is true of all Henderson County Habitat for Humanity homes, Dodd Meadows homes are designed to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency and safety.

The master plan at Dodd Meadows includes park areas, playgrounds, sidewalks, walking trails, ponds and bright cottage-style homes. In addition, the neighborhood community center is available to both Dodd Meadows residents and organizations from the surrounding community for meetings and group activities. Educational programs are offered to homeowners as well.
