Sewer line blockage causes overflow from Blythe Street manholes

Hendersonville’s wastewater collection system experienced a discharge of 12,150 gallons of untreated wastewater from two manholes at 305 Blythe St. at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, the city said.

The sewage entered Wash Creek in the French Broad River Basin. The sanitary sewer overflow was caused by a partial main line blockage caused by wipes, grease, rags and other items that should not be flushed.

"We remind the public to only flush the 3 P’s (pee, poo and toilet paper)," the city said in a news release. "Items like wipes, feminine products, or diapers should never be flushed down the toilet. Even 'flushable' wipes are not truly flushable because they get clogged before they can break down."

The city notified the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources of the event on Friday and will be reviewing this matter. For more information, contact water-sewer officials Adam Steurer or Tim Sexton at 828-697-3073 or the DEQ's Dan Boss at 828-296-4500.
