New group forms to advocate for bicycle safety

A new advocacy group in Hendersonville, Bike.Walk.HVL, is hosting a launch event at Trailside Brewing Co., 873 Lenox Park Drive,  from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23.

All are welcome to attend, socialize and learn how they can help make Hendersonville safer for biking and walking.

“Unfortunately, our town just isn’t safe for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Stephen Gamboa, an ER physician at Pardee Hospital and one of the group’s founders. “Crossing busy roads is particularly dangerous.”

The group's core focus will be advocating for the construction of better biking and pedestrian infrastructure. With the first section of the Ecusta Trail set to open by the end of 2024, there will be an increase in the number of people riding bikes through Hendersonville. Bike.Walk.HVL aims to make those rides safe and enjoyable, particularly for families with children. The group has also begun working with the national organization Safe Routes to School to make it easier and safer for children to walk to school.  To learn more or get involved go to www.bikewalkhvl.org.
