Children's 'Rootabaga Stories' open this week at Carl Sandburg home

The free Rootabaga Stories summer children’s plays open this week and run through July 27 at the amphitheater at the Carl Sandburg home, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site announced.

Apprentice actors from the Flat Rock Playhouse Vagabond School of the Drama plus former and current Playhouse Jr. actors will perform “Rootabaga Express!,” a musical adaptation of Carl Sandburg’s children’s books, Rootabaga Stories. Shows are 10:15 a.m. Thursdays and Saturdays; there will be no plays on July 4 and July 7. The free 30-minute shows are appropriate for all ages.

A free shuttle — donated by the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara — runs daily and makes stops in the main parking lot, goat barn and Sandburg home. Visitors with mobility concerns are strongly encouraged to visit when the shuttle is running.

The visitor center/park store and the Sandburg Home are open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. To make advance house tour reservations visit Recreation.gov - Camping, Cabins, RVs, Permits, Passes & More
The goat barn is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Access to the goat barn, grounds, trails and farm is free. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. Leashed pets are allowed on trails and grounds.
