Mills River OKs new walking trail at park

MILLS RIVER — The Mills River Town Board on Thursday authorized a contract for a local construction company to build a 4,170-foot walking trail that loops from Town Hall to the edge of the Mills River at the town park.

Moore & Son bid $134,755 for the work, which includes a 10-foot wide paved trail over a stone base, storm drainage, silt fencing and seeding and mulching. Other bids among the six contractors invited to submit prices ranged from $140,752 by J.L.S. Co. to $175,325 by Fletcher Grading Contractors.
The low bid came in slightly under the projected cost of $140,000. The rear walking trail completes Phase 1 of the park, which the town built with the help of a $500,000 state Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant. When it completes the trail, the town will be eligible for a $43,000 reimbursement from the recreation fund. Town officials want the work done by June.
The park, on 50 acres of town land, includes a shorter walking trail, tennis courts, a playground, picnic shelters and a dog park.
