South Main redesign quickly taking shape

Workers were striping parking spaces and reconfigured lanes and creating a 10-foot pedestrian-bikeway this week.

Work is proceeding quickly on the South Main redesign that narrows the road from five lanes to two, adds a 10-foot bike lane and 17 angle parking spaces.

"Basically what's driving this is the trail’s coming in about this time next year and we have an opportunity to get folks — bicyclists and pedestrians — safely from the Ecusta Trail to downtown,” city Public Services Director Brett Detwiler told the Hendersonville City Council in March when he unveiled the "road diet." Parallel parking on the east side of South Main will remain. Bonus for downtown visitors: the newly created spaces, being south of Allen, are free. After repaving the road from the railroad tracks, contractors have striped the new road pattern and the parking spaces, which are already heavily used.
