Dogwood grant supports Apple Ridge affordable housing development

An affordable housing development on Sugarloaf Road received a major boost with a $1 million grant from Dogwood Health Trust, the Housing Assistance Corp. announced on Friday.
“We are grateful for the continued affirmation of our work by these long-standing partners," HAC Executive Director Margaret Lebeck said in a news release. “We are focused on meeting challenges of the current housing landscape through dynamic collaboration, Housing Assistance has been helping people find their way home since 1988, but never has housing been a more critical factor of our local economy.”

The Dogwood Health Trust grant comes after Henderson County and the city of Hendersonville appropriated $800,000 each for infrastructure. Dogwood Health Trust has also committed $500,000 over the next two years to enhance HAC’s capacity to meet the rising need for safe, affordable workforce housing in the region.

The Asheville Regional Housing Consortium voted last week to recommend granting the $600,000 in HOME funds. The Asheville City Council, which makes the final decision on the award, will meet next on July 23.

Made up of 20 single-family homes and 60 apartments, the Apple Ridge development is a joint venture between the Housing Assistance Corp., Givens Estate Inc., the city of Hendersonville, Henderson County and other partners. Founded in 1988 by local churches to make home repairs for the elderly, HAC has expanded to include home repairs, housing counseling and new construction projects in Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties.
