Deadline is Monday to enter Apple Recipe contest

The North Carolina Apple Festival is inviting cooks to submit their best baked goods made with apples during the 2024 Apple Recipe Contest.

The contest  will be held on Friday, Aug. 30, at the Historic Courthouse behind the mainstage of the festival. There will be prizes for 1st and 2nd place in all categories as well as a grand prize. Entry is free.

Categories are:

  • Bread – sweet or savory in a loaf or muffin form
  • Pies and Pastries – must have pie crust or pastry dough component
  • Desserts – includes cakes and cookies
  • Kids – made for kids by kids (w/adult supervision)
  • Local Business – a local business in Henderson County that produces an item in one of the categories. This category is open to professional pastry chefs as well. The Local Business category only one has one winner, who will receive the Apple Recipe Trophy to display at their business. (Local Business entries do not need to provide as a recipe as this can be proprietary information.)

Here are the rules:

  • Any interested individual may enter the contest.
  • Recipe entries must be on line by Aug. 26.
  • Participants must bring the entire finished product to the Community Room on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse (1 Historic Courthouse Square) between 9:30-10:30 a.m. on contest day. 
  • Judging will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
  • Winners will be announced during the award ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on the mainstage of the Apple Festival in front of the Historic Courthouse before the opening ceremony of the festival, which begins at 2:15 p.m. Times are subject to change slightly based on Apple Festival scheduling.
  • No items requiring refrigeration will be accepted due to lack of refrigeration facilities.
  • Entries must be covered with some type of wrap to protect from insects.
  • Individuals may enter more than one recipe, but each recipe must be in a different category and must be submitted online individually.
  • Recipes must be original (not copyrighted).
  • Standard measuring units should be used in all recipes.
  • Include the variety of apple used in written recipe.
  • All recipes must contain at least 2 cups of apples or 1 cup applesauce and be freshly homemade.
  • Taste, texture, and eye appeal will be used in scoring entries.
  • All recipes become the property of the Apple Festival Committee and N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center. Entry constitutes permission to edit, modify, adapt, publish, and otherwise use the recipe in any way.
  • If participants are unable to pick up their award at the mainstage ceremony, awards will be available for pickup at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service office at Jackson Park.
