Drivers on a stretch of Interstate 26 West are cruising on smooth concrete.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation closed I-26 West Monday night between U.S. 25 (Exit 44) and Long Shoals Road (Exit 37) in order to complete work on the new lanes. Traffic was shifted onto the new roadway Tuesday morning.
The operation is part of the I-26 widening projects in Buncombe and Henderson counties. Shifting traffic to the inside lanes will allow crews from Fluor-United to begin diamond-grinding the outside lanes and complete outstanding operations on the outside lanes and shoulder.
