City announces grand opening of Brooklyn Community Garden

After three years of fundraising, planning, community building and garden workdays, the Brooklyn Community Garden expansion and revitalization is near completion. The city of Hendersonville is inviting the public to the grand opening of the garden at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 20.

The grand opening will begin with remarks from the community stakeholders who made the project possible, followed by a garden tour. The first community garden for the city of Hendersonville, the Brooklyn space at 1055 Ashe St. will be a place for gathering and learning for all ages and mobilities.

“The Brooklyn Community Garden revitalization project has been a labor of love,” said Jane Grossman, a Henderson County Master Gardener who served as project manager. “A collaborative effort between the city, non-profits, community organizations and everyday volunteers, the dream of building Green Meadow's access to fresh food and a safe outdoor community space has become a reality.”

Highlights of the garden include:

  • Pergola for community gatherings
  • Blueberry house
  • Garden beds including children’s area and ADA-accessible beds
  • ADA-compliant path
  • Pollinator plantings

The garden will also feature a special children’s garden as a tribute to Crystal Cauley, environmental and community champion who died unexpectedly last June at age 44.
