Thunderstorm knocks out power for thousands

Severe thunderstorms that thrashed the area early Sunday knocked out power at thousands of homes and businesses, Duke Energy said.

The storm brought high winds and heavy rain across the region, and an advisory issued by the National Weather Service warning of 40-50 mph wind gusts remained in effect until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. at 11 a.m. Sunday, 4,013 Duke customers in Henderson County remained without power, out of 69,425 total. Transylvania County was harder hit, with 8,047 power outages, or half the county's total of 16,768. Buncombe had 5,881 outages.

Things clear up nicely early in the week. Monday and Tuesday should be sunny with high of 53 and 69 and Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of  71, the NWS said.
