John and Pat Shepherd pose with granddaughter, Charlotte, daughter and son-in-law Sher and Dustin Phillips, and the 2024 King Apple Parade grand marshals Roy and Wanda Williams.
John and Pat Shepherd, longtime organizers of the opening ceremony and main stage entertainment at the North Carolina Apple Festival, will be honored as the grand marshals in this year’s festival-closing King Apple Parade on Labor Day.
The Shepherds have been an integral part of the festival for over 50 years. Both are former presidents of the festival, and John currently serves on the executive board. Together, they have taken on significant responsibilities in organizing entertainment and coordinating opening ceremonies — two vital features of the festival.
"The Apple Festival would not be what it is without the dedication, leadership, and passion that John and Pat have for our community," the festival board said in a news release. "It is only fitting that we honor them in this special way.
We are truly honored to have John and Pat as our Grand Marshals this year, and we look forward to their continued involvement in the festival."
A four-day celebration held over Labor Day weekend, the North Carolina Apple Festival honors growers and the apple industry with a street fair, live entertainment, the King Apple Parade and more.
