BBQ & Bluegrass back on Saturday at Jump Off Rock

Bluegrass and Barbecue drew a big crowd last May.

LAUREL PARK — The popular BBQ & Bluegrass at Jump Off Rock takes place this weekend with bluegrass and old-time music by Junction 280 and the Rocky Flats Bluegrass Band and Pit Boss serving barbecue.

Sponsored by the Laurel Park Civic Association, the twice-a-year music and picnic at the top of Laurel Park attracted more than 1,000 visitors last year. About 700 turned out for the spring Bluegrass event in 2012.

Saturday night's event is the rain date from the postponed May 18 concert and picnic. The forecast for Saturday is mostly sunny with a high of 84, the National Weather Service says, a big improvement from the set-in rain and cool weather forced the postponement.

Organizers hired Junction 280 as the second band because Appalachian had a conflict with the new date. Junction 280, which plays bluegrass and gospel, is made up of musicians from Mills River, Horse Shoe, Tuxedo, Big Willow and — "the only foreigner" — Alabama.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday. The pulled pork barbecue plate includes sides and a roll, sweet or unsweet tea or water. Bring a chair, picnic blanket and a cooler.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children under 12, and available at the Laurel Park Wine Market and Laurel Park Town Hall and on line at laurelparkcivicassociation.org. Tickets for the canceled May 18 event can use their tickets for the bluegrass concert or the fall concert at Jump Off.
