Transylvania County will dedicate its new animal shelter with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the facility on Old Rosman Highway.
Transylvania County commissioners, Rosman and Brevard officials and Friends of the Animal Shelter chairman Clyde Brooks will be on hand to make comments. After the ribbon cutting, tours will be given of the entire facility. While there are no animals currently held at the new building, the public is encouraged to see and tour the new facility.
Dr. Brooks, DVM, and Nita Hunt, owner of Pure Pets, formed FOTAS in August 2011 to raise money to bridge the gap between the county's budgeted amount and the actual cost of the new shelter.
The new shelter incorporates construction features that will make it a safe, clean and inviting facility. There are three separate dog runs, each with its own air ventilation and drainage system to prevent the spread of disease.
The feline area has an exclusive glassed-in area where the public can enjoy the cats from the reception room or for a close-up view from within the room itself. The cat housing area has a positive ventilation system which means air is exhausted through the cage itself.
The new shelter is at 1124 Old Rosman Highway off U.S. 64. The public should park in the NC DOT parking lot on Old Calvert Road. Shuttles will be provided to the new shelter.
