New construction rises by 24 percent

Residential building construction rose by 47.6 percent and commercial work climbed by 44.9 percent in the fiscal year ending June 30 over the previous fiscal year, the Henderson County inspections department reported.
Contractors in 2012-13 received 515 permits for new homes or apartments, up from 349 in the 2011-12 fiscal year. Residential additions and remodeling totaled 615, up 15.2 percent.
New commercial jobs totaled 71, up from 49 projects in the previous year, while commercial additions and remodeling work inched up by 1.8 percent, with 226 projects.
The value of new apartment and home construction in FY2012-13 was $72 million, up 41 percent from the 2011-12 total of $51 million. New commercial work showed a small gain of 1.7 percent, to $36.3 million. Overall, the value of new construction rose 24.7 percent, to $108 million. Residential and commercial remodeling and additions dropped in value, from $36 million to $30 million, or 16.8 percent.
The industry finished the first half of 2013 at a strong pace as well. In June contractors pulled 105 permits for new homes, which accounted for more than a third of the new home permits so far this year of 261. The six-month total was up 25 percent over 2012. In June the county issued 16 permits for new commercial work. The 41 jobs so far this year are up 36.7 percent over 2012. Overall, the 2013 value of $57.6 million was up 13 percent over 2012.
