Prep athletics association honors Supt. David Jones

Henderson County Schools Superintendent David L. Jones.

Henderson County Schools Superintendent David L. Jones has been named the recipient of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's Bob McRae Superintendent of the Year.



He has been active in NCHSAA activities, serving on the Education and Athletics Committee and previously on the Realignment Committee. In 2007 Jones received the NCHSAA Merit Award. His coaching awards include 1984-85 Boys Basketball Class A State Champion Runners-up, Head Coach; 1984 Blue- White All Star Game, Head Coach; 1984-84 All Western North Carolina Coach of the Year; and 1983-84 Boys Basketball Class A State Champions, Head Coach. Jones will be honored on May 1 at the NCHSAA's annual meeting at the Dean E. Smith Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 

Jones became Superintendent of the Henderson County Public Schools in 2010. During his 36 years in education, he has served the children of Henderson County with great dedication and commitment in many capacities: as a teacher and coach at East Flat Rock Elementary and Edneyville High School; assistant principal at Rugby Junior High School and principal at Flat Rock Junior High/Middle School; Director of Testing and Accountability; Senior Director for Accountability and Facility Management; Senior Director for Facility Management; Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services; and Associate Superintendent.
He serves on the Board of Directors of United Way of Henderson County. He is a member of the Hendersonville Rotary Club, Henderson County Department of Public Health Board, Henderson County Transportation Advisory Committee, and The Ochlawaha Society. Mr. Jones also served on the Board of Deacons of Fruitland Baptist Church.
He has received many honors and awards over the years for his service to children. In 2013 he received the NCHSAA Special Person Special Person Award for his dedication to maintaining a wholesome athletic environment and great service to the organization. In 2012 the North Carolina School Community Health Alliance named him the School Superintendent of the Year because of his extraordinary support to the four school-based health centers in his school district. He was noted as being concerned not only for the education curriculum, but also for the wellbeing of the whole student. He was the 1994 Wachovia Principal of the Year for Henderson County.
A graduate of Mars Hill College, he has a master's and education specialist degrees from Western Carolina University.
