At last, on Friday afternoon, after the jury was seated, Judge Guice admonished the members not to talk or read about the case and then sent them home. He directed a bailiff to usher the remaining pool of jurors into the courtroom.
"I apologize for dragging this out," he said. "Part of (the fault) is mine, part of it's all these folks in front of me. I'm reminded of the song by Barry Manilow — "Looks Like We Made It.'"
The remaining citizens, about 200 of them, were free to go on with their lives. They won't have to sit for a month in a cold windowless courtroom. They won't have to listen for 1,300 hours as doctors, hospital administrators, experts, family members and other witnesses express facts. Unlike the jurors, they can talk to their spouse about what they did today. They won't lose the rest of their summer. They had made it to freedom.
"You all have made it," the judge concluded. "It's going to be a while before any of us inside the bar can say that."
