Mex-Italy restaurant, which tried to appeal to local diners with a wide-ranging cross-continental menu, has closed after eight months.
The 1201 Asheville Highway building that opened as Howard Johnson's in 1965 has been home to numerous restaurants, including Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, Hobo's, Karpathian Grill, Main Street Pizza and Jimmy's Barbecue.
Southern Commercial Realty is marketing the property again.
"It has been updated tremendously both with Mex-Italy and Jimmy's," said real estate broker Jon Blatt. "It's 3,685 square feet with plenty of parking, high visibility and a corner location. We are looking for a new tenant for a restaurant or something else."
The Mex-Italy owners and the employees of the family-run business have moved on to other locations, Blatt said.
"They have had and still have other restaurants in other locations in Western North Carolina," he said. "Most of them are going to their other restaurants. They're very nice folks. We're sad to see them go."
