The Blue Ridge Literacy Council met all 13 required program practices for the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) during monitoring by the North Carolina Community College System in April, the literacy council said in a news release.
"Blue Ridge Literacy Council is to be commended for its services to students and its desire to strive for improvement," the report from the monitors said.
The report was the result of the visiting community college system team reviewing records and interviewing staff, tutors and students. "Some of the highest scores came in the areas of contextualized learner-centered instruction, the use of a wide-range of learning modalities during instruction, the curriculum for our citizenship class, and monthly programs for tutors along with instructional information found on our website, " said Steve Kirkland, the Literacy Council's executive director.
The council is normally evaluated every five years. "This report was an affirmation of the excellent teaching by our tutors and the dedication of our students, making BRLC one of the best councils in the state," Kirkland said.
BRLC provides education to adult learners in reading, math, writing and speaking English. Students are matched with trained volunteer tutors. BRLC is accredited by ProLiteracy America and is a United Way of Henderson County agency. For more information on becoming a student, or a tutor at BRLC, call 696-3811. The next orientation for new tutors is Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 10-11:30 a.m. Visit us online at www.litcouncil.org.
