Kindergarten signup runs below projection

School enrollment in 2012-13 may drop below projections if early indicators hold up.
Assistant schools superintendent Bill Parker told the Henderson County School Board last week that early registration April 3-5 for kindergarten children totaled 685, compared with 770 to 780 the last couple of years. Using the typical extrapolation, the early signups would result in actual enrollment of 930 to 940 students in their first school year, which is down from the last two school years.
Early signup totals came in below projections at Fletcher, Mills River and Upward elementary schools and higher than forecast for Edneyville and Sugarloaf.
“These three days (for early signup) is not the ‘be all end all,’” Parker said. His appeal? “If you have kindergarten children, please get them in and get them registered.”
