Ingles fires latest salvo in grocery war

Although Ingles Markets erected a chain-link fence draped with black netting around its old supermarket at 625 Spartanburg Highway, there’s no hiding what’s going up.
The Black Mountain-based food retailer received a building permit for a 72,000-square-foot store that will contain a pharmacy, a more upscale meat and seafood counter and prepared food to go.
It’s the latest but not the last entry at Hendersonville’s most competitive grocery battleground. Within sight of the new Ingles are Fresh Market and Harris Teeter. A new Publix is going up on Greenville Highway at White Street. And there’s also Whitley Drugs, a CVS and Walgreens in the immediate neighborhood.
General contractor Vannoy & Sons of Jefferson estimated the building value at $6.2 million. The total cost including site work is about double that, Henderson County inspections officials said. Subcontractors include A-American Electric of Fletcher and Dotson Plumbing Co. of Travelers Rest, S.C.
