Balfour Education Center is having its third annual Empty Bowls Event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26. This event is part of a nationwide non-profit program working to end hunger and food insecurity.
More than 85 percent of students at the Balfour Education Center qualify for government assisted school meals. This assistance provides the students with breakfast and lunch, but over the weekends some students and their families do not have enough to eat.
Balfour has participated in the Back Packs program for the past few years. This program provides some of the school's students with a back pack or grocery bag of food to take home to their families for the weekend. The back packs contain non perishable items for dinner and breakfast to supplement families' needs until students return to school the next week.
The art classes at Balfour are hosting Empty Bowls Event to raise money for the Back Packs program. Each art student, as well as many staff members, will make clay bowls to donate to the event. Guests are invited to the Balfour Education Center for a simple meal of soup/chili, bread, and a beverage. In exchange for a $10 cash donation, guests will choose a bowl to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. All money raised will be donated to the Back Packs program.
