Laurel Park Town Council member's move to S.C. creates vacancy

LAUREL PARK — After a newly elected council member moved to South Carolina, Laurel Park has a vacancy on its town board the town hopes to fill within 90 days.

Commissioner Bob Vickery and his wife, Kay, moved to Greenville, South Carolina, to be closer to his children and grandchildren, Mayor Carey O'Cain said.

"He is no longer a resident of Laurel Park and resigned from the council on Dec. 6," O'Cain said. "Bob has effectively served on our council for the last 12 years. Bob’s background in architecture and planning has been invaluable. We will all miss Bob and his wife, Kay, and wish them well on this new chapter in their lives.

"Starting immediately, the town will accept applications for Bob’s position," O'Cain said. "Any qualified Laurel Park resident may complete an application. Applications are available at Town Hall. The town hopes to fill this vacancy within 90 days."

The new council member would have to run for election if he or chooses to in 2021, for a two year term. In 2023, the seat will go back to a four-year term. Vickery, along with O'Cain and George Banta, was re-elected without opposition in the Nov. 5 town election.
