Mud Run signup off to fast start

HENDERSONVILLE — About 500 adventurous racers have already signed up for Western North Carolina's first full-scale mud run — the Mad Mountain Mud Run.

It's time to register to guarantee your spot in this unique event.

The 3.5-mile mud-filled obstacle race will be Sunday, June 3, on 60 acres near Berkeley Park in Hendersonville and is open to individuals and teams. A festival will be in full swing all day with music by two regional bands: The Lonesome Road Band and Stipe Brothers and Friends. Festival-goers can enjoy food, beer, and mud-fun activities for all ages. Registration is required to participate in the Mud Run; there is no admission or registration fee for entry to the grounds for the festival or to watch the race.

The Mad Mountain Mud Run is designed for participants with varying levels of ability — from the extreme adventure racer to those giving this sport a first try. The 20 race obstacles must be scaled, traversed, or maneuvered successfully — or participants may take a time penalty if the challenge proves too difficult.

"We have a course map, training tips and a list of Frequently Asked Questions on our website," said Ellen Seagle, race administrator. "It's fun to see the range of people signing up for the Mad Mountain Mud Run — this event is shaping up to be epic!"

All proceeds from the event will benefit Hands On! – A Child's Gallery, a downtown Hendersonville experiential learning center for children. The organizers are on track to raise an estimated $40,000 for the children's museum with this event. A big part of the fund-raising is thanks to the long list of sponsors, especially presenting sponsors Park Ridge Health and Southeastern Sports Medicine.

"When I first learned about the Mad Mountain Mud Run, I knew that Park Ridge Health would want to be a big part of it," said Jason Wells, vice president of the Park Ridge Experience. "And the team at Southeastern Sports Medicine — a regional, complete orthopedic and sports medicine physician practice — jumped in right away. We'll be a big part of the event and will share our passion for the health of our region in a fun and meaningful way."

Participation in the race is limited to the first 1,300 to register.
