The Asheville Triathlon gets a change of venue this year, moving to Patton Park in Hendersonville for the three-part challenge on Sunday.
The move to the city park off Asheville Highway allows “a longer event duration to ensure a safe and social-distanced environment,” Race Director Daphne Kirkwood, of iDaph Events, said.
The mini-triathlon includes a 400-meter swim, a 12½-mile bike ride and a 5K run. The run and cycling portions will use parts of Oklawaha Greenway, which runs 3½ miles from Jackson Park to Berkeley Park, while the swimming leg takes place at Patton Pool.
“Because the Asheville Triathlon is in a racing format where individuals have a time-trial start, by themselves, one-at-a-time, it was the perfect event to return to the community and add enhanced safety and social distancing measures,” Kirkwood said.
The Asheville Triathlon also offers a way for people to participate virtually. Through Aug. 31, triathletes have access to course information so they can complete the Patton Park-based course on their own time or come up with their own course and complete the event when they want.
