Donald O. Thompson, Sr., 86

Donald O. Thompson, Sr., 86, of Hendersonville, died on March 9, 2015 at the Elizabeth House. He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry Edward and Nellie Smith Thompson of Mill Spring NC as well as two children: Susan Thompson and Mark Thompson, and two brothers: A.R. Thompson and Lawrence Thompson, and one sister, Gillie Thompson Fowler.

Don was born and reared in Mill Spring, graduating from Mill Spring High School. After high school he graduated from Spartanburg Methodist Junior College, and continued his education with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Appalachian State University. He was teaching when he got drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed at the Pentagon. He moved back to the area and taught school at Mills River Elementary and then West Henderson High School where he was a mathematics and driver's education instructor. During the summers when Don had a break, he began building homes in Henderson County. He soon earned such a reputation as not only a quality builder but one who was very fair, honest and he was a generous philanthropic. Eventually Don decided to change careers and started building homes for families of Henderson county full time. Some of the well known residential developments include Camelot, Sedgewood, Heatherwood, Pickwick, Heatherwood, English Hills, Long John Mountain Estates, Haywood Knolls and various commercial buildings including the Mountain Home Post Office. He was the benefactor to build Margaret R. Pardee's Graham-Stowell Tower. Don was appreciative of the work bestowed upon him and he was very generous to Henderson County though numerous ways. He was active in Community Foundation, a member of the Hendersonville Country Club and he was of the Baptist faith. He loved to travel, watch western movies and spend time at Lake Lure with his family and friends.

Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 30 years, Linda, four children: Donald O. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Amelia Island, Sally- Jane and her husband Lars Busk of Charlotte, Carol-Ann Thomspon of Charlotte, and Maxwell Thompson of Ft. Myers, Fl. He is also survived by two step-daughters Gina and her husband Jeff Kilpatrick of Hendersonville, and Leslie Poarch of Arden. He was blessed with many grandchildren: Seth Thompson and his wife Jennifer of Charlotte, Ben Thompson and his wife Alexis of Charlotte, Josh Thompson and his wife Nichole of Tulsa, OK, Nicolai, Christian and Lucas Busk of Charlotte, Spencer Thompson and Paris Thompson of Ft. Myers, Fl., Tristen Bouler of Arden, and Ava Kilpatrick of Hendersonville and one brother Lafayette Thompson of Asheville and a great granddaughter Emma Thompson of Charlotte.

The family wants to thank everyone that has been involved in the entire care of Don and would like to give special recognition to: Lisa Marie Licciardi and other gave givers for their attention to his health and wellbeing, Dr. James Reis for his medical expertise, and the entire staff of both Pardee Hospital and the Elizabeth House/Hospice for their incredible care and service. The caring personal as well as professional friendship that Don had with Ken Youngblood for years will always be cherished and appreciated by the entire Thompson family.

Don's children want to say a very special thank you to Linda Thompson for her devotion, love, friendship and care she gave our dad. She was his world as he was hers. She brought pure joy to our dad and we love her dearly for all she does!

Sally Beatrice Capps Beddingfield, 93

Sally Beatrice Capps Beddingfield, 93, of Zirconia, NC, passed away on March 13, 2015 at the Laurel's of Hendersonville.

She was a native of Henderson County and the daughter of the late Jim Capps and Una Ward Capps and was a lifelong and dedicated member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church. She loved to work in her flower beds and vegetable garden and was happiest surrounded by family and friends who knew her as "Granny" or "Aunt Bea." She was always willing to help others and was loved dearly by all her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford W. Beddingfield; one son, Clyde Beddingfield; one grandson, Jeffrey Beddingfield; two sisters: Mae Capps Maybin and Isabelle Osteen Staton; as well as two brothers: J.D. Capps and Doyle Capps.

She is survived by her five children, all of Zirconia, NC: four sons: O.K. Beddingfield, Wayne Beddingfield and his special friend, Anna Brackman, Benjamin Beddingfield and his wife, June, and Zeb Beddingfield and his wife, Sandra; and one daughter, Una Mae Beddingfield Robinson and her husband, David. She is also survived by two brothers: Donald Capps and his wife, Ludith of Hendersonville, and Douglas Capps and his wife, Elaine of Zirconia. She is also proudly survived by seventeen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 16, 2015 at Cedar Springs Baptist Church with the Reverend Dan Holbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Thompson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel.

Jerome L. Miller, 83, a resident of Warners, NY and Mills River, NC passed away March 12 in NC. Born in St. Paul, MN, Jerry served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning home he started his family in the Syracuse, NY area. He was retired from Western Electric and Shaker Carpenter Shop. Jerry enjoyed woodworking and paper crafts. He was a past member of the National Historic Railroad Assoc. and the CNY Bluegrass Assoc. He was a member of Christ Community UMC and Mills River UMC. Predeceased by his parents Esther and Lawrence Miller and his step-mother, Bertha Miller. Mrs. Aileen Harmon Sinclair, 93

Mrs. Aileen Harmon Sinclair, 93, of Gerton, died on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 with her loving family by her side at the family "home place". She was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 43 years, Marion C. Sinclair, a brother Charles Harmon and four sisters: Ruth Bess, Ann Beam, Lula Bell Allen, and Mildred Wright.

A native of Waco, NC, she was born on September 3, 1921. She attended Waco High School and then she attended Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Morganton, NC. After several years of nursing, Aileen married the love of her life, Marion. They had three children and their home was the gathering place for great times, an abundance of Ms. Aileen's fantastic cooking and ice cream. It was the kind of warm home filled with laughter that everyone in the area came to know as the "home place". She filled the home with love and God. Aileen was cooking and nursing right up until the end. She was very active in her church, Bearwallow Baptist Church. Aileen spent her life devoted to caring for others and administering to the sick. Her nursing spanned the world as she and the family followed her husband's military career. She worked at various hospitals in the area including the Veterans Administration and St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a member of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Community Club and the Veterans Auxiliary. She loved taking care of her beloved pets.

She is survived by her three children: son, William Sinclair of Gerton, daughter McAlynn "Mackie" Sinclair Price and her husband Dr. Bulo Ervin Price III of Shelby and son Jeffrey Sinclair of Gerton. She is also survived by one sister Nell Farrell and her husband Max of San Antonio, TX. She was blessed with six grandchildren: Jessica Price, B.E. Price IV, Jeremy Sinclair, Connie Sinclair, Josh Sinclair and Sarah Sinclair and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be at 4:00 PM on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Bearwallow Baptist Church on Highway 74, Gerton, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior and at other times at 6601 Bearwallow Mountain Road, Gerton, NC. Elsie Enders Schaefer, 95, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015 at Spring Arbor.

Born in Alberta, Canada the daughter of Jacob and Mary Enders. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence and a daughter, Carol.

Survivors include her daughter, Jan Morgan; two granddaughters; several great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, March 16, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Ken Langsdorf officiating. The committal will follow in the Grace Lutheran Memorial Garden.

Robert "Bob" James Mazzeo, Sr., 78

Robert "Bob" James Mazzeo, Sr., 78, died on Saturday, March 7, 2015 in Hendersonville after a period of declining health. He is preceded in death by his parents Rocco Mazzeo and Rose, his brother Peter and his mother in law, Verna Suriano.

Bob was born in Emerson, New Jersey on September 12, 1936 where he attended Westwood High. He worked in the family business with his father and brothers which was established in 1928 called Mazzeo & Sons. His brother Joe still resides in the original family home. In 1959 he moved to Vero Beach FL to be near his parents and sister. Bob started his career as a United States Postal Letter Carrier in Vero Beach, FL . Families on his routes still ask about him to this day because of his dedication and commitment to his service. He was an avid LA Dodgers fan and for many years he had front row seats behind the dugout at Holman Stadium "Dodger Town" in Vero Beach, FL, home of their spring training. During his childhood, his parents were friends with the O'Malley's, former owners for many years of the LA Dodgers, and he knew personally many of the players. Bob even tried out for the Dodgers at one time. Up until the very end, he could tell you everything there was to know about baseball as it was his passion. The family spent their vacations every year in Maggie Valley, NC where they fell in love with the mountains. In 1981 Bob transferred to Hendersonville, NC to continue his letter carrier service. He retired as a letter carrier and had recently been honored with his 45 year pin for being a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Bob was a devout Catholic and he attended Immaculate Conception Church in Hendersonville. He also attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Asheville NC.

He shared a very special bond with his daughter Lisa. After he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia/ Parkinson disease in 2010, Lisa's priority became taking care of her daddy. He loved his banana splits, watching Dean Martin movies together, baseball and football games, and enjoyed how she always decorated his room for the holidays and the seasons. Later when he moved to Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation, he became like a member of the family to all the staff.

Bob is survived by: wife Lareen Sisk Mazzeo of Asheville, his brother Joseph Mazzeo and his wife Barbara of Emerson, NJ, his sister Phyllis O'Brien of Vero Beach, FL, Barbara Mazzeo, mother of their three children, daughter Lisa Edney and her husband Michael of Hendersonville, son Robert Mazzeo Jr. and his wife Tina of Haines City, FL, and daughter Sandra Morrow and her husband Jason of Hendersonville, NC. Bob was blessed with three grandchildren: Hallie Mazzeo of Haines City, FL and Mitch and Megan Edney of Hendersonville, NC. Bob also had several nieces.

Helen Lucine Morlock Etherton, 94

Helen Lucine Morlock Etherton, 94, passed away peacefully at Carolina Village Medical Center Tuesday, March 10, after a long period of declining health. A native of Illinois, she was a daughter of the late James R. and Elizabeth King Morlock. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Morlock and sister, Mary Elizabeth Morlock Fink. She was a graduate of Urbana High School, Urbana, IL and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Illinois. She was a long time member of the university's Chi Omega Sorority. She married William C. Etherton in Atlantic City, NJ on December 19, 1941. Following a three-day honeymoon, William, who was enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Forces during WW II, was shipped overseas to serve in North Africa and Italy for the next 3 1/2 years. Despite the hardship of this lengthy separation, their marriage endured for the next 73 years. They spent the last 30 years as residents of Henderson County. Mrs. Etherton enjoyed volunteer work with Pardee Hospital Auxiliary and received a 3000 hour pin for service. She was also one of Pardee Hospital's "Women of Hope" having been a two time cancer survivor. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and an active member of the Catholic Women's Guild.
Mrs. Etherton is survived by her husband, William C. Etherton; two sons, James W. Etherton and his wife Cindy of Swansea, IL and Jud Etherton and his wife Gayle of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Julie Etherton Parker and her husband Jeff of Salisbury, Dottie Etherton Morgan and her husband Chad of Peoria, AZ, Myra Etherton McDonough and her husband Kip of Hickory and James Justin Etherton of Belleville, IL; six great-grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Parker, Will, Landon and Grace Morgan and Harrison McDonough.
A mass of the resurrection will be celebrated 10:00 am Friday, March 13, in the main sanctuary of Immaculate Conception Church. The Reverend Praveen Boyapati will officiate. Burial will be in Carbondale, IL at a later date. The family will receive guests at the church following the service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carolina Village Medical Center and Care Center and Four Seasons Hospice for their care and help during this period.

David Henry Blumm, 61

David Henry Blumm, 61, of Mountain Home, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015.
He was a native of Scribner, NE and a resident of Henderson County. He was the son of Kathryn Blumm and the late Henry Blumm and was also preceded in death by daughters, Mandy Blumm, Jenny Miller; and granddaughter, Haley Elizabeth.
Mr. Blumm was employed by Haynes Wire since 1981. He was a member of Balfour United Methodist Church, loved the beach, fishing, and watching racing.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Kim Blumm; sons, Matthew Blumm and girlfriend Charlene, and Jason Blumm and wife Christa; mother, Kathryn Blumm; sister, Jolene Meyer and husband, David; grandchildren, Aubrey, Sianna, Chloe, Ashlyn and Makayla; son-in-law, Chris Miller.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Balfour United Methodist Church with Pastor Deborah Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm, Wednesday at Shuler Funeral Home.

Thelma Hooper Heatherly, 90, of Hendersonville, NC went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Pardee Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Albert Slayton Hooper and Lilly DeHart Hooper and was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph William Heatherly and a sister, Jane Williams.
She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
She is survived by four children, Gail Metcalf and her husband Willard, Arthur Heatherly and his wife Carol, Dale Gardner and her husband Steve all of Zirconia and Chris Heatherly and his wife Cornellia of Tryon; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Beddingfield of Hendersonville and Emogene Williams of Arizona; a brother, James Hooper of Mills River and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

She was the oldest of 13 children born to George and Delsia Pridmore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Garren.

Glenn F. Lynch, 74, of Hendersonville, NC went to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 7, 2015.
He was born in Lebanon, Missouri and had lived in Henderson County for 65 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Lynch and Rhoda Lynch Dotson, a son, Christopher Lynch and two brothers, Dennis and Ronald Lynch.
Glenn loved his Lord, family, grandchildren and his dog Tess. He was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering with projects and was especially passionate about mowing and taking care of his lawn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Georgia Jones Lynch; a son, Mark Lynch and his wife Sabrina of Hendersonville; a daughter, Debbie Bean and her husband Steve of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Christopher A. Douglas J. Mitchell, 80

Douglas J. Mitchell, 80, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.
Born in Yonkers, OK on February 24, 1935, he the son of the late Thurman and Lorene Barnett Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by a son, Timothy D. Mitchell, who died in 1974.
Douglas served in the US Navy for 28 years, retiring from service in 1981. He was a member of the Hendersonville Elks Lodge #1616 since 1992. He enjoyed traveling and playing golf and was an avid gardener.
Douglas is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Marjorie Mitchell of Hendersonville; his children, Cynthia H. Poling and husband, Shorty, of Loraine, IL; Kathi A. Carpenter of Hendersonville; and Robert L. Mitchell and wife, Lisa, of San Antonio, TX; stepchildren, Debbie Tokas and husband, Frank, of Arizona; John VanBuren and wife, Glenda, of Las Vegas, NV; and Todd Logsdon and wife, Barbara, of Tuxedo; twelve grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and an Elks Rest Ceremony will be held at 1 PM Saturday in the lower level of the Hendersonville Elks Lodge. The family will receive friends following the service.

Larry Douglas Green, Jr., 43, died on Friday, February 28, 2015 at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. He was preceded in death by both of his grandfathers: Charles Pruitt and Adger Green as well as his step-father, John Holland.

Larry was a Henderson County native and graduated from East Hendersonville High School in 1989. He worked for the Selee Corporation for a number of years, as well as worked in landscaping prior to his declining health. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed attending church. He loved being outdoors, and wearing his baseball cap on backwards.

His greatest joy in life was being a father to his three children. He enjoyed playing sports with Tanner, and enjoyed their fishing and hunting trips together. Although he wasn't successful in turning Madison into an "outdoorswoman", he taught Lacy to be a great "inner tuber." He had a wonderful sense of humor and taught his children the value of being respectful and honest.

Larry is survived by two daughters: Madison Green and Lacy Elizabeth Green and one son: Tanner Green. He is also survived by his mother, Pat Holland, as well as his father Larry D. Green, Sr. and his wife Judy of Spartanburg, SC, and his maternal grandmother Arliss Pruitt that he lovingly called "Mama". He had one uncle: Ronnie Green of Tuxedo and a special friend Cameron Green of Hendersonville.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Thos. Shepherd & Son Church Street Chapel. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight, Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home at 125 Church Street, Hendersonville, NC. Mildred A. Clark, 90

Mildred A. Clark, 90, of Horse Shoe passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015 at her home.
A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late Noble and Esther Allison. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Reba Cartee, Clyde Allison, Marvin Allison, Mary Noble Allison and Bill Allison.
Mildred was an avid gardener. She loved her family and enjoyed helping other people. Mildred was of the Christian faith.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Ralph A. Clark of Horse Shoe; four children, Emma Pierce and husband, Bob, and James Clark and wife, Teresa, all of Florida; Virginia Boyd and husband, Dewey, of South Carolina; and Karla Lowman and husband Bob of North Carolina; brother, Roy Allison; sister, Lois Carter; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Friday, March 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Lowman, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Thursday at Shuler Funeral Home.
