Lapsley ousts Young; Edney, Thompson, McDonald win

Longtime civil engineer Bill Lapsley ousted three-term incumbent Larry Young in Tuesday's Republican primary, and joined incumbents Michael Edney and Tommy Thompson, who survived challenges.

 Henderson County Sheriff Charlie McDonald defeated two challengers in his bid for election to the office he was appointed to two years ago.

Edney won handily over challengers Andrew Riddle and Hogan Corn while Thompson narrowly defeated challenger Tim Griffin by just 1 percentage point, 50.5 to 49.5 percent of the vote.

McDonald won with 51 percent of the vote followed by Michael Brown with 31 percent and Erik Summey with 18 percent. Lapsley defeated Young, 57 to 43 percent.

In the Register of Deeds race, Lee King and Evona Kilpatrick appear to be headed for a runoff. King won by 98 votes but was held just under 40 percent of the vote in the three-way primary, according to unofficial returns.

Two-term state Rep. Chuck McGrady easily defeated challenger Ronnie Edwards, winning 62 percent of the vote.
