Newman endorses King in 11th Congressional District primary

Greg Newman, district attorney for Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties, on Wednesday endorsed Wayne King in the election race to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows to represent North Carolina's 11th District.

"I enthusiastically endorse and support Wayne King to be our next congressman," Newman said in a statement. "I have known Wayne for many years. His background makes him well-suited to support policies for continued economic growth. His work with the state GOP and with Congressman Meadows has prepared him for the political challenges of the position. Wayne understands the needs of our district and he cares about our people. We will be fortunate to have Wayne represent us in Congress."

"I am honored to have Greg Newman's endorsement," King said. "A rock-solid law-and-order prosecutor, Greg knows what it takes to keep the people of Western North Carolina safe. I've had the good fortune to work with Greg for years on behalf of the people of Western North Carolina, and I look forward to continuing that fight with him."

Newman's endorsement comes on the heels of endorsements from the sheriffs of eight Western North Carolina counties: Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye, Graham County Sheriff Joseph Jones, Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin, McDowell County Sheriff Ricky Buchanan, Mitchell County Sheriff Donald Street, Rutherford County Sheriff Chris Francis, Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney and Yancey County Sheriff Gary Banks.

A Western North Carolina native, King has spent the past seven years as Meadows' district director and deputy chief of staff.
