The Henderson County Heritage Museum will present the history of local education, "School Days — 1797-1940," opening on Saturday with a tribute to longtime history columnist Louise Bailey and a replica of a 1930s era classroom.
Grand opening is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the Louise Bailey tribute at 2 p.m. in the historic courtroom.
The exhibit includes a complete timeline covering the history of schools in Henderson County, many of which no longer exist. The special exhibit features notebooks on some of the old schools with information that everyone should find interesting. Additionally, the Thomas Room has been transformed into a one-room schoolhouse reminiscent of schools from the 1830s to the 1930s.
At 2 p.m. Joe Bailey, son of Louise Bailey, and Mrs. Bailey's close friend, Terry Ruscin, will present the illustrated program, "Remembering Louise Bailey" featuring a "sampling of Mountain cooking" followed by book signings in the Carolina First Community Room. Mrs. Bailey, a local historian and Times-News columnist, wrote and spoke extensively on the history of Henderson County. The event is free.
