League announces winners of 2022 Short Video Contest

Ari Nichols of Rugby Middle School won first prize and a $250 Amazon gift card while Aunica Tomlinson and the team of Lauren Koch and Khloe Labruno, also from Rugby Middle School, won second prize and a $100 Amazon gift card in the 2022 Short Video Contest sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Third place went to Flat Rock Middle School student Caleb Marshall.
In collaboration with the Henderson County public schools and private schools, the contest invited participants to create original short videos that clearly and creatively showed how people can help the environment.
Judges were Graham Fields, assistant to the president of Advent Health and chair of Chamber of Commerce Education Committee; Jeff Jennings, president of ECO and a founder of Friends of DuPont Forest; and Lucy Butler, who serves on the Henderson County Environment Advisory Committee and is a co-lead volunteer with Mountain True’s water quality program. Other supporters were Sherman’s Sporting Goods, Kilwin’s, Pinball Museum on Main Street, Celtic Creamery, Mills River Creamery, Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Tank, Elijah Mountain Gem Mine, Marco’s Pizza and Second Act Coffee Shop.

Garden Jubilee features bee event

Among the garden-related exhibits and programs at Garden Jubilee 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, in downtown Hendersonville, is a new “Pollinator Alley.”
Located near the Visitor Center stage at 201 South Main Street, the exhibit will feature vendors and booths offering free pollinator-friendly seed packets while supplies last and information on pollinator habitat gardening from Bee City USA-Hendersonville. Make-and-take crafts for children will be offered as well as locally-grown native plants, hand-crafted nesting houses for native bees, children’s books about nature and pollinators, local honey and more.
Presentations on Saturday include:
• 9-10 a.m. City Pollinator Murals Walk ‘N Talk (seven-tenths mile one-way), presented by Patrice German, Bee City USA-Hendersonville; Tricia King, TTK Design; Elizabeth Queen, Lead Artist for Hendo Sidewalk Murals.
• 10-10:15 a.m. Let’s Go/Vamos Hendo (Bilingual Book Reading), presented by Elizabeth Queen and Sofia Fernandez
• 10:15- 11 a.m. Kids Caring for Mother Earth, presented by Elle Travis, Nature Connections Book Series / Caregivers of Mother Earth
• 1-2 p.m. Recipes for Pollinator Gardening Success, presented by Kim Bailey, Milkweed Meadows Farm
• 2-3p.m. Native Bees: Nature’s Pollination Machines, presented by Jill Jacobs and Brannen Basham, Spriggly’s Beescaping

Alisha Sullivan honored with DAR’s ROTC medal

Alisha Sullivan The Abraham Kuykendall Daughters of the American Revolution awarded the National Defense Committee ROTC Medal and certificate to cadet Alisha Sullivan of North Henderson High School at the Military Ball on May 7. Sullivan demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. DAR Regent Penny Summey made the presentation.
 

Curb Market celebrates 98th birthday on June 4

The Henderson County Curb Market, 221 N. Church St., will hold a June Jubilee and celebrate its 98th anniversary 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 4. There will be a hot dog plate lunch available for purchase, live music by Two Fer with David Emmons and Glenn Case, and balloons, treats and activities for the children, including a “plant a flower” project at the children’s activity table. Customers will want to take time to visit with vendors and shop for produce and the many unique and beautiful items made by local crafters. The market offers fresh baked goods, free-range eggs and preserves. With each purchase a raffle ticket will be given for a chance to win a basket filled with Curb Market items along with a free packet of seeds.

City to host shred day Friday, June 10

The city of Hendersonville will sponsor a Document Shred Event for City residents 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the Dogwood Parking Lot, 423 N. Church St.

Shred-it will have its shredding truck in the parking lot to allow residents to dispose of sensitive materials. City residents are invited to bring up to two boxes (or 50 lbs.) of paper items to be shredded. Suggested items to shred are financial statements, canceled checks, credit card statements, payroll stubs, insurance forms, old tax returns, forms from doctor’s offices, etc. This event is not for businesses. The public can simply drop their documents off or stay and watch their documents be destroyed. The event will happen rain or shine. If the shredding truck fills up before 10:30, the event will be over.

To make this part of a community outreach effort, the city is asking that residents coming to the event bring non-perishable pantry items to donate to Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM). Suggested items are listed on IAM’s website at https://www.iam-hc.org/current-needs.
