Donate food, checks on Souper Bowl Sunday

For Interfaith Assistance Ministry, Henderson County’s largest nonprofit provider of crisis services, the Super Bowl Sunday football championship has become an extra special time of year when churches, synagogues, community groups and caring individuals across Henderson County come together to be part of the nationwide Souper Bowl of Caring.

The Souper Bowl of Caring helps transform the annual Super Bowl into a nationwide movement inspiring people to give locally and make a collective impact on hunger.

Here in Henderson County, you can organize a Souper Bowl of Caring drive in your faith congregation, neighborhood, civic organization or club to help local neighbors who are food insecure. Of course, individuals can give back too.

An easy way is to ask your organization to collect cans of soup and other canned and nonperishable foods and donations of $1 or more to go with your food donations. Bring them to IAM during February, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

“With food prices at the highest they have been in four decades, more and more families and senior citizens on fixed incomes are seeking assistance from Interfaith Assistance Ministry for food,” said Elizabeth Willson Moss, IAM’s executive director. “At this time of year, after the generous holiday giving season, our financial donations and food donations drop dramatically. Anyone who can afford to help reduce hunger in our community is invited to join this caring effort.”

If you need help with a large drive, call IAM Food Pantry Manager Tom Stark at 828-697-7029 to arrange a pick-up.

“This year let's make sure we score a touchdown in the fight against hunger,” Moss said.  “Thank you for your efforts to relieve hunger in our community!”
